The 993 (1994-1998) is famously the last of the air-cooled Porsches that characterized Ferdinand Alexander
‘F.A.’ Porsche’s 911 since 1963. A bastion of tradition and heritage for over forty years, the air-cooled Porsche
911 sports cars are consistently lauded by enthusiasts as lightweight and agile, with a unique sound and driving
experience. Amidst the everchanging world of sports car design, the fundamental proportions and product identity
of F. A’s original neunelfer has been maintained, with only refined enhancements. However, as opposed to
receiving a mere facelift like some of its predecessors, the 993 shared just 20% of its parts with the 964, whilst
maintaining its classic 911 profile.

Designed by Harm Lagaay and Tony Hatter, the fourth generation 911 featured significant improvements on its
predecessor. According to Hatter, “The Porsche board always had very firm ideas about its shape. It was claimed
the 964 was 80 per cent new, but visually it looked barely 20 per cent new. We needed to do something less
conservative, but without being too radical.” Its smoothed front was influenced by the 959, plans for the 989 four-
door sedan that never reached production, and 928. Its stance and wheel arches became more muscular, its
retractable rear wing was enlarged, and its teardrop mirrors revised. The 993 was referred to by Porsche as “a
significant advance, not just from a technical, but also a visual perspective.”
A new multi-link rear suspension was derived from the 989. The light-alloy subframe with coil and wishbone
suspension corrected oversteer, and when combined with engine enhancements, vastly improved handling and
driving experience. The system was also used in the 993’s successor, where it provided the 996 with greater
stability. It was the first 911 to receive a six-speed manual transmission as standard and introduce the new
automatic Tiptronic S.

Like its predecessors, the 993 had several variants, differing in body style, engines, equipment, and drivetrains.
Both coupe and cabriolet were introduced in April 1994 for the 1995 model year, followed by the Carrera 4. The
options list for the 993 Carrera included various suspension set-ups, up to five different styles of wheels, and
three seat styles, either comfort, sport, or racing.

The 993 was discontinued in 1998, replaced by the revolutionary, water-cooled 996.
