Only the third entirely new platform since the original 911 launched, the 991 launched in 2011 as a replacement for the 997 generation. The 991 was slightly larger overall, the wheel base was increased by 100mm and the overall length by 70mm. A newly developed trans axel allowed the rear wheels to be moved 76mm back from the engine which served to significantly improve the weight distribution and therefore cornering performance. Use of high strength steel, aluminium and composites reduced the curbweight to 1,380kg. The updates and weight reductions make the 991 generation vehicles lively and refreshing to drive.

The 991 generation marked the first change in Targa roof technology since the 993. The new technology was housed within a fitting reminiscent of the original Targas, but finished in striking silver. The 991 generation kept the Carrera’s b-illar positioning but featured a unique glass dome at the rear. The distinct targa branded silver band connecting the b-pillars and the glass dome make the 991 generation Targa a particularly beautiful vehicle.
