The Porsche Carrera 3.2 (1984-1989) is lauded by car enthusiasts worldwide as one of the greatest sportscars of
all time, imbued in the public consciousness as an everyday supercar. Its story embodies Porsche’s 911 brand as
one that combines Zuffenhausen’s heritage with technological innovation.
Available in fastback coupe, targa, and cabriolet body styles, the 3.2 Carrera was the last of the original 911’s, as subsequent models featured new chassis, brakes, and suspension. Many devotees of the legendary series

Ferdinand ‘Butzi’ Porsche’s classic design of the rear-engined, air-cooled 911 remained fundamentally
unchanged since its inception in 1963. When the front-engined, water-cooled 944 coupe was introduced in 1981,
the series was threatened with retirement. However, innovation arrived when Peter Schulz replaced Ernst
Fuhrmann as the company chairman. A neunelfer aficionado, Schulz, with the support of Ferry Porsche, quickly
reinstated the 911. The 3.2 Carrera was launched in 1984, harnessing a name that hadn’t been employed by the
marque since 1975.

Designed to be an improved 911, the new Porsche was named after its engine enhancements. Translated as
‘race’ in Spanish, ‘carrera’ carries a legacy of motoring success for the German brand. Following Hans
Hermann’s famous win in a 356 at the Mexicana Carrera Panamerica in 1954, Porsche christened his quad-cam
engine the ‘carrera.’

Slightly heavier than its predecessor but almost visually indistinguishable from the popular Super Carrera (SC),
the 3.2 helped restore the 911’s revered status to the automotive world, utilising a more powerful, higher-
displacement engine, with larger fuel capacity. Increased by 200cc, the new 3.2 was the most powerfully naturally
aspirated engine fitted to a production 911 at the time, featuring technological advancements first introduced in
the Turbo. Extra capacity was achieved through mating the existing alloy block with the turbo engine’s longer-
stroke crank. Higher-compression pistons, larger valves and a modern Bosch DME injection and ignition system
increased power output to 231 bhp and 210lb/ft torque.

Although fuel consumption rose, engine innovations in the form of an electronic fuel management system
improved fuel economy, consuming an average of 29 miles to the gallon. The car had a top speed of 150mph
and 0-60mph in approximately 5.3 seconds. Thicker disc brakes, 5-speed manual transmission, and new gear
ratios optimized engine performance, making it reportedly more rewarding to drive than previous models.
By 1989 the 911 was firmly established on racetracks worldwide, with an ever-increasing loyal following.
Fortuitously, the car’s launch coincided with a prosperous decade of worldwide economic growth and became
synonymous with the era of the Yuppie. The Porsche Carrera 3.2 sold 70,044 examples between 1984 and 1989
and has since become the most successful selling 911 model, with a rapidly appreciating value.
