A Targa is a special one that carries a long history within the Porsche family. When the Targa was first introduced at the Frankfurt motor show in 1965, it was named as neither a cabriolet nor a coupe. It was the best of both worlds. 1991 AutoKraft AC Cobra LHD Lightweight

The British-American AC Cobra (1962-67) is one of the most famous, and fastest, muscle cars of all time. Known for its rivalry with Corvette, the Cobra was a 2-door high-performance sports car that was manufactured by Thames-Ditton based AC Cars, in collaboration with Texan race driver and automotive designer, Carroll Shelby. Shelby wanted to combine American V8 power with ‘superior European handling;’ impressed with the lightweight AC Ace from 1957-59, he negotiated with AC to design and manufacture a road and track performance car.

By early 1962, AC had built the first prototypes, by autumn, 100 cars were dispatched to Shelby American in California for competition. The chassis for the six-cylinder Ace remained essentially the same, forming the basis for the first roadsters which used a 221cid, 260, or 289cid small-block. To rival Ferrari in the GT class, the Daytona Cobra Coupe was created using an AC Cobra chassis and 289cid engine. The 289 was so fast and agile that it dominated racetracks, winning at Monza, Sebring, Nurburgring and Daytona. The Cobra roadsters and coupes won the 1965 FIA Championship and World Manufacturers Championship.

In 1965, a new chassis (Mark III) was designed with a 500hp NASCAR 427cid engine; now a muscle car, it was listed by Guiness World Records as the fastest-accelerating production car in the world, reaching 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds with a 186mph top speed.
After production of the legendary AC Cobra ended in 1967, many MK III replicas began to appear. Although they bore a resemblance to the original, British company Autokraft manufactured genuine AC badged sports cars.

In 1982, Brian Angliss, founder of Autokraft, built an AC 289 continuation car called the Autokraft MK IV, with independent suspension and 4.65L Ford 302cid V8. The roadster had 427 styling and near identical aluminium body to the MK III, however it was refined to include plastic mouldings inside the wheel arches to protect the aluminium, with heat and noise insulation on the front bulkhead. Following licensing from AC Cars, the car was renamed Autokraft AC Cobra MK IV. The AC MK IV Cobra produced 250hp at 4200 rpm, with a top speed of 134mph and 5.2second acceleration rate.

The car was so respectful to the original, that the Hurlock family, owners of AC, sold their rights to the name in 1986. Angliss then sold 53% of his company to Ford, after which the MK IV was sold in their US showrooms. Despite Shelby’s dislike of replicas, he was complimentary about the quality of the AC Autokraft Cobras.

The Lightweight version was unveiled at the 1990 Geneva Salon. Weight was decreased from 2620lbs to 2360lbs. Alloy heads, holley four-barrel carburretors, and the absence of catalytic converters increased power to 370hp.

The first generation California was launched in 2008 at the Paris Motor Show as a new model to fill the Touring Car gap in Ferrari’s lineup and aimed to attract new owners to the brand. The groundbreaking design came out of the Pininfarina studios and marked a number of firsts for Ferrari. It was the first front-engined Ferrari with a V8, the first with a 7 speed dual clutch transmission, the first hardtop convertible with a folding metal roof, the first car with multi-link rear suspension and the first Ferrari with direct fuel injection.

In 2015 the California T hit the market as a drastic facelift of the original model. New sheet metal and revised body features enveloped a new interior, revised chassis and a new turbocharged powertrain that gave it the moniker “T”. Updated features brought the car in line with recent design language changes; the F12’s influence is apparent in the front fascia. As a tourer the California T is designed for comfort and usability, two words more apt on a people carrier’s slogan than a Ferrari, but the main effect on design is a higher ride height which resulted in a wider appeal and greater accessibility. Despite the more user friendly set up, the California T doesn’t skimp on power or aggression. The front-engine V8 set up remained unchanged but featured a new engine and transmission: a 3.9L twin-turbocharged V8 producing 553 hp and a top speed of 196mph with a 7 speed dual-clutch (different gear ratios), putting the California T’s 0-62 at a blistering 3.6 seconds but most notably reducing it’s emission figures by 15%. In the 1960s Ferrari were the experts in grand tourers that hit the sweet spot between track and road, and the California T does an excellent job carrying on from that storied lineage. Our 2015 California T is a low-miles, highly specced model that is presented in the classic and beautiful combination of white over Bordeaux. It presents an opportunity for stress-free, fun motoring that’ll still outpace most when the light turns green.

The 365 GTB/4 was introduced as a replacement for the phenomenally successful 275 GTB/4 at the Paris Auto Salon in 1968. Although never internally referred to as the “Daytona,” the media coined the term to commemorate Ferrari’s famous 1-2-3 finish at the 24 hours of Daytona in 1967. Penned by the infamous Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina, the design was a departure from the sumptuous rounded features of its predecessors. The new, more wedge-shaped, sharp-edged styling and covered headlights were a resounding success, but a U.S. safety regulation forced a facelift midway through the production run. The new pop up twin headlights (and a prominent role in Miami Vice) made the car a true icon. Ferrari chose to stick with the front-engined, rear-drive layout for the 365 GTB/4 despite Lamborghini’s switch to mid-engine, instead trialling the mid-engined layout in the more affordable Dino. The engine carried on the success of the 275’s Colombo V12 and produced 347 hp, a top speed of 174mph and a 0-60 time of just 5.4 seconds. Weight distribution was optimised by placing the five-speed manual transmission in the rear, and four-wheel independent suspension.

The Daytona was Ferrari’s race meets road darling of the lineup and this is a once in a lifetime example. 1 of just 158 RHD cars, this unique Daytona is one of the best unrestored examples out there. It’s in impeccable, truly concourse-worthy condition. This Daytona has benefited from proper care and maintenance throughout its life and should not be compared to restored cars which don’t have the same sense of character and originality. With only 39,000 miles on the odometer, it is one of the lowest mile, best condition cars on the market. The desirable black over red leather interior is a head turner and is in excellent knick. It also benefits from stainless steel exhaust, a Ferrari “Classiche” Certification, full continuous history, all the handbooks and leather wallet, leather tool roll, and superb provenance.

Classic Car magazine once visited Hendon Way Motors to do a road-test article on our GT3 RS 4.0L and upon arrival one of the reviewers was stunned to find his father’s old Daytona in our showroom. He was so pleased to be reunited with his childhood love that he returned to write an 8 page spread on the car that featured in the March 2013 issue of Classic Car, the highlights of which included this glowing review: “This Daytona achieves the most impossible feat of looking like a year-old car held in suspended animation.” We have the full article available and stored in the history file for the car, something that adds to its already meticulous provenance.
Another provenance booster was its recent Concours win. This unrestored, three owner 365 runs exceptionally well and duly won the “Cars In Their Original State (Post-War)” at the 2019 Chantilly Arts and Elegance. Judges were particularly impressed by the working electronics, the beautifully worn but unblemished interior, its overall sense of historic character and how well the car performed.

The Ferrari F430 (2004-2009) was conceived as the successor to the mid-engine, rear-wheel drive 360. Ferrari gave automotive designer, Frank Stephenson, the challenging task of making Goran Popović’s 360 Modena design even more beautiful, with improved aerodynamic efficiency. The new incarnation was a collaborative project between Stephenson and Pininfarina and assembled by Maranello. Stephenson was the first Director of Ferrari-Maserati Concept Design and Development in Maranello and Modena, Italy.

The mid-engine, rear-wheel drive F430 sports car was available initially as a 2-door Berlinetta (closed-car) bodystyle, then as a 2-door Ferrari Spider (convertible) in 2005. Despite sharing the same lightweight aluminium space frame chassis, roofline, doors, and glass as the 360, the F430 had improved suspension, a new engine, and a noticeably different appearance.

When creating the Ferrari F430, Stephenson applied his design philosophy to research the company’s history and identify a successful, powerful element that could be modernised, thus continuing the new car’s genetic link. He has emphasised the importance of maintaining the recognizable image of Ferrari without resorting to copying previous designs.

An artisan and designer, Stephenson used traditional hand drawn sketches to organically discover what features, proportions and lines would work. To ensure that the new Ferrari’s front end looked distinctively Ferrari, he reinterpreted the 1961 Formula 1 156 ‘shark nose’ famously driven by Phil Hill, to include large oval openings in the front bumper.

Stephenson believed pre-Turbo Ferraris displayed the most romantic design elements; through his drawings, the 360 became more angular and aggressive, but retained its sensuality. With modern vehicles becoming wider, Stephenson could accentuate the bulbous ‘tumblehome’ space between the body of the car doors and the windows, without compromising the interior. The 360 taillights were moved upwards and outwards from the surface of the rear, making its bulging silhouette more dynamic. The radiators were inherited from the 360 but were more visually impressive. To affirm the F430’s identity as a genuine sports car, the additional air vents were functional, cooling down the brakes or funnelling air to the engine. The F430 is the only car to have its name embossed in the Testerossa-styled side mirrors.

The F430’s 4300cc ‘Ferrari-Maserati’ FI36 V8 was a new power plant with racing heritage; the 4-valve cylinder head, valves and intake trumpets were derived from Formula One engines, whereas the connecting rods, pistons, and crankshaft were new. With a 20% displacement increase balanced by just 4kg weight growth, the F430’s mid-mounted V8 produced 490bhp. Its introduction marked the first engine change from previous Ferrari V8s that were descended from the 1950s Dino racing program and has continued into the 458 and California. The F430’s drag coefficient remained unchanged from the 360 Modena, but the downforce was enhanced, reaching 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 196mph, 0.6seconds quicker than the 360.

The F430 was a triumph of function and form.

Our classically striking 2005 Ferrari F430 Spider Manual proudly showcases the most well-known Ferrari shade of red, the intensely passionate ‘Rosso Corsa.’ Translated as ‘Racing Red,’ this famous exterior has characterized the Ferrari marque since the Italian company’s racing origins in the 1930s, when teams were required to paint their vehicle the respective country colour. Gracing the marque’s most classic models, red is strongly associated with the Italian brand’s luxury designs and has been elegantly paired in this model with a tan leather interior and Daytona seats. Effortlessly combining style and performance, the F430 convertible is a genuine work of automotive art and design.

In the 1950s the Mercedes design department was made up of a motley Cerberus-esque crew comprised of Fredrich Geiger, a typically german techy test engineer, Karl Wilfert, the Mercedes born and bred head of car body development, and Bela Barenyi, an Austro-Hungarian, aristocratic, safety-obsessed, bohemian. When Paul Braq arrived from Paris having studied under the infamous and somewhat mad Phillipe Chabonneaux, he injected a French sense of elegance and style into the patent-heavy technologically driven department. At the time, Mercedes was focused most on stability, but visibility was becoming a defining feature. The “Pagoda” roof, which took inspiration from the concavity of oriental shrines, was a way of adding rigidity to the boundary-pushing light and airy glasshouse. Early sketches done by Geiger, ever the engineer and stereotypically German, show a general arrangement for a car, liner and symmetrical, with equal proportions and an austere interior. Braq by comparison, like most designers to this day, drew fanciful and exciting designs that were reigned in by the strict discipline of the Mercedes-Benz studio. The W113 (230 SL) was essentially a compromise between the two. Composed, symmetrical, with perfect lines and visual tension, its beauty lies in simplicity and refinement. Its slender, feminine lines somehow manage to belie the strength and sturdiness of the car’s construction without looking heavy, instead seeming sophisticated and agile. The balance continues on the interior which is neither excessively adorned or bare. They managed to get the perfect balance of chrome in an era that was rife with overuse. The diversity of the design team fostered the balance and elegance that the car is so well known for. Nothing needs to be added or taken away; by creating something entirely functional, they managed to also make something perfectly beautiful.

According to a statement from Mercedes Benz at the time of the Pagoda’s launch: “it was our aim to create a very safe and fast sports car with high performance that despite its sporting characteristics provides a very high degree of travelling comfort.” The result was a perfectly Franco-German, track-bred, tech gilded, boulevardier; equally happy driving the back-roads of Switzerland and cruising the beach-front of St. Tropez.

The November 2019 issue of Octane posed the question: “Is the Pagoda the perfect Classic for modern-day use?” This is the second car we have on offer today makes a strong case for the answer being “Yes.” This RHD, manual car is fresh off a recent platinum concours quality restoration. It is one of the most impeccably finished vehicles we have ever had and is shown with full invoices and documentation of said restoration. We even have further invoices that detail the vehicle’s history pre-restoration including previous owners. This striking grey over red combination is quickly becoming one of our favourites (just look at our Grigio and Burgundy 275) and shows off the simplicity of the design beautifully.

The 993 model year is famously the last of the air-cooled 911s and was redesigned from the ground up, only borrowing 20% of its parts from the previous generation. Significant technical advances, including a new light-alloy subframe with a coil and wishbone suspension, an all new engine and newly standard 6 speed transmission, made significant progress in creating a more civilized car and a greatly improved driving experience. Designed by Tony Hatter, the 993 retained the classic 911 shape but featured updated exterior panels, significantly flared wheel arches, and a smoother front and rear bumper design. The aggressive stance of the wide-style body accommodated the new multi-link rear suspension which gave the car better stability. Newly improved handling made the car more planted and helped to reduce oversteer in cornering as well as improving ride quality and reducing interior noise. The acclaimed rear design sacrificed top speeds for better handling making it the perfect weekend partner to tackle the narrow, winding English country roads. Simply put, the new design and technical improvements meant the 993 generation Porsche hit the sweet spot between usability and fun.

The 993 turbo was introduced in 1995 and featured a new twin-turbocharged engine which brought the output up to 402 hp with the help of air-to- air intercoolers, electronic engine management, and redesigned cylinder heads. The 993 Turbo was the first to feature all wheel drive which was accommodated by wheel arches that were widened by approximately 6cm over the standard 993’s already enlarged arches. Most notably, the rear featured a fixed “whale tale” rear wing which housed the intercoolers and dramatically upped the 993 Turbo’s “cool” factor. The Turbo also featured larger brakes, new 18” alloy wheels, and was one of the first production cars in the world to feature the OBDII diagnostics system which would later feature as standard on the base 993 models. Thanks to a host of updates and firsts, the Turbo is an exciting drive but the all wheel drive system means the car still feels in control.

1966 PORSCHE 912 COUPE – METALLIC BLACK

Porsche was a formidable competitor in sports car racing in the 1960s, often entering half a dozen cars which
were then sold to customers. Before the 911 went into production in 1963, the company had achieved
considerable commercial success in the 1950s with the lightweight, quick-handling 356. Zuffenhausen engineers
had established a reputation for building quality, high performance vehicles that could steer and handle well, on
and off the racetrack.

The four-cylinder, rear-engine Porsche 912 was originally conceived in 1965 as both a replacement for the 356
and a more affordable version of the 911. Available in both coupe and targa body styles, its aesthetic was
identical to the neunelfer, sharing its aluminium body, chassis, independent suspension layout and gearbox. The
912 initially had 4 gears, but 5 gears were soon integrated. The car was so connected to the Porsche 911 that
when the latter’s wheelbase grew by 57mm in 1969, so did the 912’s.

The Porsche 912’s brakes and new four-cylinder air-cooled engine were inherited from the 356, alongside the
wing mirrors, headlamp surrounds, and air vents. Its interior utilised multiple 356 components, including interior
seats, heating, ventilation system, 4.5 x 1.5inch steel wheels, and disc brakes.The 356’s engine was economical and lighter than the new 911 flat six, reducing the 912’s weight by 130kg to 935kg. When combined with the lengthened chassis, the Porsche 911’s oversteer was overcome, providing a better handling balance and a smoother ride.Despite being detuned to 90 bhp at 5800rpm and 86 lb/ft torque, the 912 could attain 0-60mph in 11.6 seconds, with a top speed of 115mph.

By combining Ferdinand ‘Butzi’ Porsche’s iconic 911 design with a cheaper price, lower running costs, and better
handling characteristics, over 30,000 Porsche 912 models were sold in its first four years of production.
However, the Porsche 911 was quickly becoming recognized as a pure driver’s car that could wield a tantalising
wild power for its owner, and its sales overtook the 912’s. The latter’s production ceased in 1969, but not before a
912 won the 1967 European Rally Championships and a 912 Targa became the 100,000 th Porsche to be
manufactured.

The Porsche 912 reappeared in 1975 as the 912E, sporting the same classic 911 body, a longer wheelbase,
identical front and rear suspension, and a larger, more powerful 2-litre Volkswagen engine, previously on the 914.
Our 1966 Porsche 912 coupe is a beautiful example of the classic Butzi design aesthetic, with fluid lines, and a
timeless Metallic Black exterior matching its original black interior. The air-cooled coupe sports a 5-speed manual
drivetrain and retains the characteristics expected of a classic Porsche. The car has received a restoration in the
past, now showing minor signs of use. After receiving a recent service and new tyres, our vintage Porsche 912 is
in all-round excellent condition and would make a worthy addition to a classic car collection.

When the 964 was released it marked the biggest change in the 911s then 25-year history. 85% of the car’s components had been revised and for the first time, all-wheel-drive was an option. In fact, not only was it an option, the 964 was initially released as a C4 showing just how much confidence Porsche had in their new system. The C2 followed 5 months later and then the tiptronic option. Coil springs, power steering, ABS and the most powerful (and best sounding) naturally aspirated flat-six engine up to that point are the modern touches that when married with the classic 911 silhouette make the 964 such a charming car. That balance between traditional 911 and modernity makes it an easy and approachable drive. Driving is an instantly invigorating but solid and balanced experience: steering is intuitive, the chassis is sure and able, and feedback from the wheel keeps the driver in constant communication with the road. The 964 is a rapidly appreciating classic that is truly usable day to day whilst retaining that traditional aesthetic and exciting engagement that are so prized by Porsche “purists.”

The 993 model (1994-1998) is the fourth generation and last incarnation of the iconic flat-six, air-cooled Porsches that defined Ferdinand ‘Butzi’s’ 911 since its introduction in 1963. The 993’s debut in 1993 for the 1994 model year replaced the 964 which had famously reengineered the original 911 chassis, introduced the first instalment of the Tiptronic transmission and all-wheel drive as options. The air-cooled engine made for a very lightweight, nimble car, with a unique sound that is idiosyncratic to the 911 and beloved by Porsche enthusiasts. With the 993’s discontinuation in 1998, the model marks the end of the classic 911 era before Porsche introduced water-cooled engines in the 996.

The 993 featured significant technical and styling changes that resulted in a special combination of modern performance and a classic aesthetic. The new Porsche shared just 20% of its parts with the 964. A new multi-link rear suspension was derived from the 989, a four-door sedan that never reached production. The light-alloy subframe with coil and wishbone suspension corrected oversteer, and when combined with engine enhancements, vastly improved handling and driving experience. The system was also used in the 993’s successor, where it provided the 996 with greater stability. It was the first 911 to receive a six-speed manual transmission as standard and introduce the new Tiptronic S.

The classic 911 aesthetic was famously largely unchanged from its introduction until 1997. The 1994 Porsche 993 exterior was created by British designer Tony Hatter, who retained the basic 964 architecture with that of earlier 911s, but accentuated the wheel arches and retractable rear wing, smoothed the front and rear bumpers, and revised the teardrop mirrors.

Built at Zuffenhausen, the 993 was available in a variety of bodystyles, including fastback coupe, convertible, targa and speedster. Drivetrains and equipment also varied, where internal engine upgrades increased power. The base 993 model was the race-derived ‘Carrera,’ which was available in rear and all-wheel drive variants. Its naturally aspirated 3.6L M64 engine was developed from the 964, combining with the new dual-flow exhaust system. The 993 (1994-1998) is famously the last of the air-cooled Porsches that characterized Ferdinand Alexander
‘F.A.’ Porsche’s 911 since 1963. A bastion of tradition and heritage for over forty years, the air-cooled Porsche
911 sports cars are consistently lauded by enthusiasts as lightweight and agile, with a unique sound and driving
experience. Amidst the everchanging world of sports car design, the fundamental proportions and product identity
of F. A’s original neunelfer has been maintained, with only refined enhancements. However, as opposed to
receiving a mere facelift like some of its predecessors, the 993 shared just 20% of its parts with the 964, whilst
maintaining its classic 911 profile.

Designed by Harm Lagaay and Tony Hatter, the fourth generation 911 featured significant improvements on its
predecessor. According to Hatter, “The Porsche board always had very firm ideas about its shape. It was claimed
the 964 was 80 per cent new, but visually it looked barely 20 per cent new. We needed to do something less
conservative, but without being too radical.” Its smoothed front was influenced by the 959, plans for the 989 four-
door sedan that never reached production, and 928. Its stance and wheel arches became more muscular, its
retractable rear wing was enlarged, and its teardrop mirrors revised. The 993 was referred to by Porsche as “a
significant advance, not just from a technical, but also a visual perspective.”
A new multi-link rear suspension was derived from the 989. The light-alloy subframe with coil and wishbone
suspension corrected oversteer, and when combined with engine enhancements, vastly improved handling and
driving experience. The system was also used in the 993’s successor, where it provided the 996 with greater
stability. It was the first 911 to receive a six-speed manual transmission as standard and introduce the new
automatic Tiptronic S.

Like its predecessors, the 993 had several variants, differing in body style, engines, equipment, and drivetrains.
Both coupe and cabriolet were introduced in April 1994 for the 1995 model year, followed by the Carrera 4. The
options list for the 993 Carrera included various suspension set-ups, up to five different styles of wheels, and
three seat styles, either comfort, sport, or racing.

The 993 was discontinued in 1998, replaced by the revolutionary, water-cooled 996.

The 2 in 991.2 signifies the facelifted version of the 991 generation 911. Porsche introduced the facelifted version of the 991 with various styling cues to keep it more in trend with the vehicle designs of that time and it still to this day looks just as sharp and clean as it did when it was introduced in 2015. When the 964 was released it marked the biggest change in the 911s then 25-year history. 85% of the car’s components had been revised and for the first time, all-wheel-drive was an option. In 1984 the AC name and tooling were taken over by Autokraft, a parts reseller and replica manufacturer. Made in the peak of the Ford x Jaguar x Aston Martin era, the DB7 began as the successor to Jaguar’s XJS. When Ford passed on the project due to high development costs, Aston Martin took over and commissioned the up-and-coming Ian Callum to re-design the project with Aston design language. In 1993 the DB7 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show and received an overwhelmingly positive reception. The F355 was a performance driven design that marked a shift in focus to drivability in both in road and track situations. Penned in the Pininfarina studios and developed by over 1800 hours in a wind tunnel, the F355 encapsulates an athleticism that blends elegant style and aerodynamic performance. The F355’s engine featured considerable upgrades from the 348’s V8. The introduction of a 5-cylinder head made it considerably more powerful and resulted in an increased power output of 375 hp. The Spider retains many of the alluring lines of the coupe with the addition of a semi-automatic soft-top offered for the first time on a Ferrari. This F355 is offered in the classic yellow over black combination and features the 6-speed manual transmission of the early models. The F355s wedge shape and sleek body are sure to make it a classic in the coming years and this is an excellent example with low miles and a host of extras.

Designed by renowned coachbuilder, Pininfarina, and built by Ferrari, the F355 Type F129 (1994-1999) is closely associated with some of the marque’s most classic and beloved designs. Despite utilising the same architecture and proportions as its predecessor, the 348, it was also dramatically different. Its elegant aerodynamic design placed an emphasis on beauty, enhanced performance, and driveability across a range of speeds and environments. It incorporated new side vents, exhaust layout and power assisted steering, engine advancements, and ventilated disc brakes. Variable suspension control added comfort when cruising, stiffening at speed. Larger tires provided advanced grip, making it more accommodating at high speeds than the 348.

The F355 debuted with some of the most modern technology of any roadgoing Ferrari, alluded to in the second 5 of the car’s name, which implied the newly designed cylinder heads, and valve count increase from 4 per cylinder to 5. Designed by Paulo Martinelli, the F129 B/C V8 was a feat of engineering; it showcased Ferrari’s racing technology vision, featuring the same rear mid-engined, F1-derived innovations, and Bosch Motronic M2.7 fuel injection. Not only was displacement augmented from 3.4L in the 348 to 3.5L, but it generated 380 horsepower and 109hp per litre, producing the best power output of any non-turbocharged engine in the world, and the most power per litre aside from the F50 V12. Its maximum speed was 183mph, with a 4.7 second acceleration rate.

The six-speed manual F355 Berlinetta was the first model to launch, followed by the GTS Targa top and convertible in 1995. Unveiled in Monaco, the Ferrari F355 Spider was breathtaking, its lines honed by 1800 hours in a wind tunnel. It hosted a rigid steel monocoque chassis with tubular rear sub-frame, and a new, power operated soft-top. Effortlessly combining aerodynamics with open air driving, the cabriolet matched the level of performance as its hard topped counterparts. In 1997, the Berlinetta became the first road car to include the state-of-the-art F1-inspired gearbox management system. The electro-hydraulic paddle shift transmission made its debut in 1989, where it was used to win the Brazillian Grand Prix. The F355 could be ordered with ‘formula one’ style clutchless sequential gearshift; although still a six-speed manual, it was operated with paddles on the steering wheel. The F355 was succeeded by the 360 in 1999.

Our Ferrari 275 GTB/4, is a stunningly original vehicle presented in its unchanged colour combination. Lovingly campaigned in rallies and tours by passionate caretakers, it would be the jewel in the crown of any collection.

This 275 is a well known car that has trialled in a number of historic tours. It has competed prolifically in the regulatory section of the Tour Auto and in the Modena Cento Ore. This 275 has been kept in perfect condition and is a testament to the benefit of continual maintenance which earned it the Bonhams Concours Best in Class award at the St. Mawes Classic. This vehicle also took part in The Salon Prive at Blenheim Palace and the Louis Vuitton Serenissima Rally, and won numerous concours events in South Africa because of its excellent order and condition.

If these accolades don’t give enough of an indication of the quality of the car, its impeccable condition does. We have a comprehensive maintenance history with invoices and photos detailing the engine rebuild in Johannesburg 26,000 kms ago by Ferrari South Africa and thanks to regular servicing whilst in our care, it runs as new. The bodywork is all original, but had a respray from Ferrari SA whilst the interior remains entirely untouched. The car benefits from matching engine and chassis numbers and the front and rear bumpers also have original matching numbers indicating that it hasn’t been in any major accidents. The interior is all original but it was repainted by Ferrari SA. With 49,000 miles on the clock, its original and complete tool kit in a leather wallet, and its original build sheets and sales invoices, we don’t believe there’s a better 275 around.

This particular vehicle was delivered new to Mr. Bucher of Bellagio, Italy in October of 1967 by Gastone Crepaldi of Milan. In 1971, at 35,056 km, the vehicle returned to the Ferrari factory for a complete mechanical and electrical check over and respray. Since this point, it has been consciously kept out of the wet, in fact Mr. Bucher kept it in a heated store as a collector’s vehicle. In 1973, at 37,490km, the car was purchased by Mr. A Negra, a well known Ferrari enthusiast and then shipped to South Africa where in 1975, it was purchased by Mr. N Dodo at 43,194 km. Under his ownership and after R15000 worth of care, the car won its first SEFAC (Southern Equatorial Ferrari Automobile Club) Concours D’Elegance in 1977 and then proceeded to win in 1978 and 1979 before being bought by a Mr. Charles Schlamm at 54,894 km and winning 1980-1982. In 1982, it won a further 3 trophies: Floating Trophy for “Best V12 Ferrari,” Floating Trophy for “Car of the Day,” and Floating Trophy for “Best 275 GTB on Show.” In 1989, the car underwent a complete engine overhaul and in 2003 it received a further “sympatico” refurbishment, whereby all the original leather, trim and beadings were maintained. Mr. Charles Schlamm stored and maintained it privately as a concours vehicle until it was purchased by Mr. Anthony Pozner in 2005, who owns the car to this day.

The 275 features some of the most alluring curves ever designed and the originality of the body work means these curves are still very much intact. In fact, the original lines are still visible from the wooden bucks it was formed on. This particular 275 is so distinguished that it was invited by Ferrari in 2004 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the start of production. It was among 50 owners and cars that were asked to participate and were invited on a factory tour and accompanying event. – Manual transmission – the collectors choice – and the final run out model for the 348 series – the 348 GTB has much better handling than it’s earlier stablemate – the 348 TB
– Not in red! The Blu Sera/Crema combination really suits the car – and we believe it is unique in this colour as a RHD car in the UK
– 348 GTB – MUCH RARER than the earlier 348 TB – this 348 GTB model was introduced in late 1993. The revised cars are called 348 GTB (252 made) and GTS (137 made) and were presented to the public as the 348 GT versions, equipped with the F119H engine (as opposed to the original F119D and US F119G). The F119H engine got a bump in compression ratio up to 10.8:1 vs the F119D & F119G 10.4:1 compression ratio, taller intake plenums, fuel pressure was raised from 3.4 bar to 3.8 bar, and different camshaft timing. For these models, both the engine deck panel and lower body skirts were body-coloured instead of black, and the rear track was one inch wider due to the mounting area, on the inside, of the rear wheels being thicker. The suspension geometry was revised which greatly enhanced its handling, ride and body control. The fuel tank was also smaller (88L) in order to reduce overall weight and provide space to improve chassis rigidity.
– As a late car (GTB opposed to TB) – has the Bosch Motronic 2.7 ECU – parts for the earlier models equipped with the 2.5 Motronic are more or less impossible to source these days
– Has the later engine block which addressed the problems associated the cam-drive jack shaft inner support bearing affecting early cars
– A later GTB with the additional 20 BHP over the launch model
– A landmark Ferrari model series – the first to feature a semi-monocoque steel chassis and longitudinally mounted V8 engine

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Chassis 09495

This stunning car is a Concours-ready, Ferrari Classiche certified example of a beautifully restored Ferrari 275 4 cam. The 275 GTB/4 is the ultimate embodiment of what a road going Ferrari could be. Designed during Pininfarina’s golden age, the 275 was elegantly simplistic yet subtly aggressive. The designers masterfully married aerodynamic lines with characteristic racing features, fully incorporating a spoiler into the boot lid. 4 Cams featured all the comforts of a road car with the Le Mans bred engine of a true prancing horse. Today, this unparalleled grand tourer is a staple on concours lawns and rallies everywhere and with only 330 made, this is your chance to be part of an exclusive and oft-admired club. 09495 has the benefit of having been worked on and looked after by highly reputable restorers, caretakers and owners throughout its life. We have a long and detailed history of this car from both Tony Willis and Marcel Massini which highlights its excellent provenance. In a recent phone call, Tony remarked at how proudly the car sits in its present, beautiful condition.

Originally, this 275 was purchased by Giuseppe Pagni, an ex-AC Milan and Fanfulla footballer, residing in Milan for 6,500,000 Italian Lire through the official Ferrari dealer M.G. Crepaldi Automobili. Crepaldi was the foremost Ferrari dealer supplying the latest Ferrari’s to Milan’s most fashionable clientele. Classiche documentation confirms that during this time, the car returned to the factory where the engine block was replaced with a new, unused block and stamped for classification purposes with the correct number pertaining only to this vehicle. This work was carried out in the late 1960s, probably whilst the car was still under warranty. The car left Italy in 1971 to reside in the US where it had a 10-year stint before returning to Europe. Upon its return, in the 1980s it was registered in Switzerland to esteemed dealer Albrecht Guggisberg of Oldtimer-Garage Ltd. who drove it at the Grand Prix of Gollion in 1988.

Guggisberg was highly thought of in the Car world and has owned most of the important collector cars over the years and had a particularly keen interest in Ferraris. At this time, Oldtimer-Garage was a veritable Mecca for enthusiasts and many other dealers relied on Albrecht for his expertise and technical knowledge. Oldtimer had the car advertised in Ferrari Market Letter and at auctions from 1988-2002 when it was bought by Gaspare Barresi. Barresi was a businessman based in Bern, Switzerland and upon delivery commissioned a full restoration by SD Autoconstruzioni in Torino, Italy whereby it was finished in the quintessential Ferrari combination of red over tan and retrofitted with cleverly hidden air conditioning. He campaigned the car at the Montreux Grand Prix races in 2002 and in 2006. It was next shown at the inaugural Villa d’Este auction by RM Sotheby’s in 2011 where it was purchased by British dealer Tom Hartley. Tom then sold the car through Specialist Cars in Hertfordshire where it was bought by Matthew Munson who registered it on English plates, had it repainted to Grigio Ferro by XK Engineering, and showed it at Goodwood Revival still with its beige interior. In October of 2011, it was re-trimmed with the present iteration Pelle Rossa (Bordeaux) leather by the legendary Luppi of Modena and underwent a further refurbishment at Bob Houghton in December of the same year. 09495 was Classiche certified on the 5th of June 2013. Munson sold the car to Graeme Earl who enjoyed the car for a few years before selling it via JD Classics to Tom Walduck.

Tom was the most recent owner and dear friend of many in the British motoring world but unfortunately passed away in 2018 before he could truly enjoy the car. He had a prolific collection over the years including a Ferrari 275 GTB 6c, a Ferrari 275 GTS, a Jaguar D-Type, a Jaguar C-Type and more AC Cobras than bears counting. He competed in the Mille Miglia in a beautiful Hispano Suiza, and participated in numerous Cento Ore and Tour Auto rallies. His passion for AC Cobras was shared by his wife who was often seen competing in her own car. He bought this 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB 4 in late 2017 and was excited to have had such a prestigious car in his collection.

09495 is a desirable model in pristine condition with completely untouched bodywork. The vehicle hasn’t been in any accidents so the curves are all original, sitting just as they were formed on the bucks in 1967. The car is presented with its original tool roll, full set of books and Ferrari Classiche. The Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 1.5 2+2 offered here at Hendon Way Motors is finished in Opalescent Gunmetal Grey with Black leather interior. It was commissioned by a client who wanted the ultimate, no expense spared, bespoke E-Type capable of touring through Europe but equally happy on his commute into London so work was undertaken by the Berkshire E-Type specialist Automo who strove to bring his dream to fruition. This stunning nut and bolt restoration started with the body and chassis being media blasted and any necessary panels replaced prior to an in-house bare metal re-spray with fresh chrome work fitted. Attention then passed to the running gear and a full engine rebuild including: enlarging the capacity to 4.3 litre, a lightened flywheel, new electronic ignition system, new timing chains, triple 45 Webber carburettors, alloy cooling upgrade, uprated oil pump, high torque starter motor, and stainless-steel exhaust system. To complement the fast road specification engine, the car has been fitted with a 5-speed gearbox, upgraded Coopercraft brakes, adjustable suspension and power steering. Other notable works included a full interior re-trim including carpets and headlining, fitting a discreet DAB radio with Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, remote central locking and alarm system and with tracking, series 1 closed headlamp upgrade with halogen lamps, full re-wire, new full exhaust system and stainless-steel wire wheels. The vehicle is offered for sale with a current V5 registration document, MOT certificate valid Hardback book showing various restoration stages. The car was featured in E-Type club magazine in November 2017. With German quality fortifying its Italian engineering, this compact baby bull has all the reliability without compromising the drama that Lamborghini had built its reputation on. Lamborghini hadn’t produced anything other than beefy V12 monsters since the Jalpa, so the Gallardo was a fresh crack at the bottom end, usable supercar market. It’s an affordable and usable sports car that has the performance, excitement and styling to match anything on the market today.

Ferrari’s introduction of the F430 prompted Lamborghini to raise their game so in 2008 they released the facelifted second-generation Gallardo. The new LP560-4 was powered by a new 5.2L V10 with an uneven firing angle that produced 552hp (560PS) and featured the “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata” direct fuel injection system which improved efficiency and diminished fuel consumption thus reducing CO2 emissions. Other changes included a 20kg weight loss, a revised transmission and a new four-wheel-drive system (hence the “-4”) as well as a redesigned front bumper that took inspiration from the inimitable Lamborghini Reventon. The new engine came with the same choices as the previous generation: 6-speed manual or 6-speed e-gear, but the e-gear was upgraded to offer a “Corsa” mode which made shifts 40% quicker and decreased traction control restrictions. At the end of the day, this baby bull is sure to put a smile on your face and with the same footprint as a Ford Focus, the Gallardo is an unbeatably usable sports car. Add a design that could have come out of the studio yesterday and you have a truly winning formula.

The seventh generation Porsche 991 (2011-2019) featured a newly engineered platform, the third since the neunelfer ‘nine eleven”s debut in 1963. Although continuing the iconic 911 silhouette, Michael Mauer’s design was revolutionary for the series, featuring high-strength steel aluminium and composites to reduce weight. Alongside new styling, the new car range was a wide body, with a 100mm larger wheelbase and 70mm increase in length. The base Carrera 2’s were the only variants with a narrower body. The chassis included a new transaxle to allow for the rear wheels to be moved backwards in relation to the engine. As a result, power to weight distribution and cornering were vastly improved, creating a more refined driving experience.

The first phase 991.1 (2011-2016) was available in fastback coupe, Targa top, convertible, and speedster body styles. Since the 911’s inception, Porsche have demonstrated their ability to specialise in one product, alongside variants that showcase power, comfort, or handling. The various incarnations of the water-cooled, rear-engine 911 included Carrera and S, GT3, GTS, Turbo, Targa 4 and 4S, R, RS, and special editions, such as the 50th Anniversary and Club Coupe between 2014 and 2016. The second phase 991.2 was succeeded by the 992 in 2019.

Porsche began experimenting with turbocharging technology on their race cars in the late 1960s, with the aim to produce a homologation special to qualify the company for the Group 4 ‘silhouette racing’ formula. The resulting 911 Turbo had an impressive reputation for outstanding performance and acceleration, both on the racetrack and road. Demand for the turbo was high in the 1970s and has only increased since due to engineering advancements.

The 991.1 Turbo was introduced in late 2012 as an all-wheel drive, with a twin-turbocharged 3.8L flat-six engine generating 513hp and 457lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the improved Porsche Doppelkupplung ‘PDK’ dual-clutch transmission from the 997, the Turbo’s weight was reduced to 3,538lbs, with greater capacities and improved performance. Innovative technologies such as adaptive aerodynamics and rear wheel steering were standard.

The 991 generation marked the first change in Targa roof technology since the 993. The new technology was housed within a fitting reminiscent of the original Targas, but finished in striking silver. The Carrera S utilised the wider turbo-style bodyshell but with the naturally aspirated engine of the base models making it truly the best of both worlds. The C2S also featured slightly lowered suspension which alongside the wider tires created better roadholding and an overall dynamic driving stance. With a quicker acceleration time and higher top speed than the C4S, it’s no wonder the Carrera S is one of the most desirable 993 models.

The 997 generation’s biggest updates were the interior and exterior styling, most notably the return to the “bug eye” round highlights of the 911 and 993 generations. The slightly widened body and larger 18” wheels gave the 997s a more aggressive stance, and they all benefited from slightly increased power. Inside, the design was similarly reminiscent of the pre-996 generation design. The return to traditional styling makes the 997 generation feel like an homage to the iconic and prolific original 911s, yet the futuristic and modern technology and engineering make it a car firmly rooted in the present. Second Phase (post-2009) 997’s included facelift styling changes as well as direct injection, and PDK double clutch transmission which made them faster, lighter and therefore more fuel efficient than the earlier models. The 997 is truly the best of both worlds, a modern car in a subtly classic body, an eye on the past but a nod to the future.

Debuted at the 2006 Geneva Auto Show, the 997 Turbo was an exciting update on the Carrera model. It featured a dramatically redesigned front bumper wherein the LED turn signal strips were integrated into the air intakes (a design feature that would be carried into the 991 generation). Like previous generations, the Turbo used the same wider body shell of the all wheel drive models, giving it that aggressive wide-stance typical of the Turbo denomination. Other design changes included large air vents either side of the rear wheels and in the rear quarter panels as well as a retractable rear wing. The rear-engine Porsche 997 (2004-2013) evolved from the revolutionary, more environmentally conscious 996, with its new chassis and water-cooled engine. Utilising combined efforts from numerous designers, alongside a final design by Grant Larson in 2001, the resulting 997 was less radical than its predecessor but more in tune with its classic heritage; technical advances were secondary to the return of classic exterior and interior styling. Pre-996 Carrera headlights reappeared, alongside a sleeker body and raked windshield. The car remained low to aid drag-coefficient, available in fastback coupe, Targa top, cabriolet, and speedster body styles. Unusually, the Carrera cabriolet was used to design and engineer the coupe version. Bigger wheels were standard, and power was slightly increased; the Carrera S engine was upgraded from a 3596 cc flat-six boxer engine to a new 3824 cc flat-six engine. In 2008, the 997 was updated for the 2009 model year to include styling adjustments, direct fuel injection, revised suspension system, larger air intakes, redesigned Porsche Sports Exhaust, and the introduction of the new 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe ‘PDK’ dual-clutch transmission, amongst others. Unveiled at the Paris Auto Show, the second phase 997 Gen II or 997.2, was lighter, faster, and more fuel efficient than its outgoing counterparts, with superior handling. Initial models included fastback coupe and cabriolet versions of the Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera S and Carrera 4S.

The 997 Carrera GTS was introduced in 2011 and 2012 as a midrange offering above the 997.2 Carrera S and below the 997.2 GT3, available as both fastback coupe and cabriolet, on rear-wheel drive (Carrera GTS) and all-wheel drive (Carrera 4 GTS). The car was wider in body and track, the only wide track Carrera variant that was also rear wheel drive. All GTS cars had standard center lock wheels, widened rear fenders, Alcantara interior and optional extras including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Sports Exhaust. The Porsche 991 debuted in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show as the replacement for the 997 and the seventh generation of the iconic 911. A new chassis platform was engineered, the third since the neunelfer ‘nine eleven’ introduction in 1963, with the second being the revolutionary water-cooled 996 in 1997.

The new 911 bore the recognisable visual characteristics of the 911 and little similarity to the outgoing 997. The car featured various power advancements, with improvements across every performance metric, reducing noise vibration harshness. The first phase 991.1 was produced until 2016, when it was updated as the 991.2; the second phase 991 was only recently discontinued when the 992 was introduced in 2019.

The 991.1 Carrera S debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011, the range initially launched with the Carrera and Targa models, alongside more powerful S versions. The base Carrera and Targa had 345hp and a 3.4L engine. The Carrera S is more powerful, equipped with a 3.8L engine generating 50 extra horsepower and 325lb-ft torque. 7-speed manual was optional. The cabriolet was introduced later that same year at the LA Motor Show. The Carrera 4 and 4S were added in 2012, with GTS, GT3, Turbo, Targa 4, Targa 4S and various special editions including the 50th Anniversary and Club Coupe between 2014 and 2016.

Designed by Michael Mauer in 2008, the 991 explored new styling and larger dimensions. The car is marginally bigger, its wheelbase increased by 100mm and overall length by 70mm. As a result, the 991 incarnation looks more imposing, longer, and wider than its predecessor; the base Carrera was the only variant with a narrow body.

To improve weight distribution and cornering ability, a new transaxle was developed to move the rear wheels back in relation to the engine’s position. However, the base Carrera had a similar weight to the 997, due to the use of aluminium, high-strength steel, and several composites. Despite this, weight increased for the all-wheel drive Turbo when equipped with the impressive Porsche Doppelkupplung ‘PDK’ transmission. Porsche’s dual-clutch transmission was carried over from the 997 and was optional for all 911 Carreras and the 991.1 Turbo (Non-S). The 991 was a more refined, less raw 911 experience.

The 3.2 Carrera came as the replacement for the 911 SC and marked the last iteration of the original, pre-redesign 911s. The Carrera 3.2 revived “Carrera” as a denomination and got the rest of the name from its new 3.2L horizontally opposed flat 6 engine. This 80% new, higher displacement engine was achieved by combining the cylinders from the SC model and the Turbo 3.3’s crankshaft stroke. The inlet manifold and exhaust systems were also new and featured alongside a slightly heavier Getrag five-speed gearbox with BorgWarner synchro. These technical advancements meant the power output was 207hp, which made for a top speed of 240 and a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds. The list of improvements was endless; bigger brake discs for better heat dissipation, an improved thermostatically controlled fan, upgraded fuel and ignition control components improved reliability, and a Bosch Motronics DME improved fuel efficiency. The Carrera may have looked nearly the same as the SC, but all the improvements underneath the hood signalled a prolific future for the 911 line.

Also known as the “Turbo-look” because of the wide wheel arches and whale tail, the Supersport was the M491 option 3.2 Carrera. Not only did the Supersport share some of the turbo’s looks, but it also featured the same stiffer suspension, braking system, and wide wheels.

The fourth generation 993 is largely defined as the last air-cooled, flat-six 911 incarnation, before it was superceded by the new water-cooled 996 in 1998. Due to its significant improvements in driving performance coupled with an exciting exterior design, the 993 was the culmination of air-cooled 911s and one of the best road cars that Porsche has ever made.

Introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year, the Porsche 993 was preceded by the largely reengineered 964, which had introduced one of the best chassis for an air-cooled 911. The 993 shared just 20% of its parts with its predecessor, with a rear suspension design derived from the 4-door 989 sedan that never reached production. The multi-link coil and wishbone construction corrected oversteer, greatly improving driving experience, comfort, and handling, and is arguably the ultimate evolution of Porsche’s rear axle. Between 1994 and 1995, the rear-engine was a naturally aspirated flat six with 272 horsepower and 243lb-ft torque.

The 993 design was an immediately popular reinterpretation of the classic 911 aesthetic. Imagined by British automotive designer, Tony Hatter, the organic forms of the 993 naturally accentuated the basic 964 architecture as well as that of earlier 911s, with integrated bumpers, flatter front wings, teardrop mirrors, and enlarged rear end with retractable wing.

Similar to its predecessors, the 993 was available in a variety of bodystyles and drivetrains and was the first generation of the 911 series to receive the six-speed manual transmission as standard. The car debuted as a fastback coupe, convertible, targa or speedster. The base model was the Carrera, with over 31,000 produced. The Carrera is known as the stiffest and lightest of the 993 models and was also offered as an all-wheel drive C4.

The 993 Targa was released in the 1996 model year and debuted a retractable glass roof dubbed the “greenhouse” system which would continue to feature on the 996 and 997 models. The 996 model year was the most drastic update since the original 911. The all-new chassis platform and new water-cooled engine marked a complete breakaway from the original stalwarts of the 911 line. The changes weren’t just under the hood, Porsche wanted a 911 for the new millennium so design chief Harm Lagaay and his team completely re-designed the bodywork and interior. The 996 featured a much sleeker body style, a more raked windshield, completely updated interior, and generation-defining “fried egg” shaped headlamps that harked back to the legendary 1997 991 GT1 race car. The 996 was made for the ultimate cruising refinement, tombstone seats provided long distance comfort yet hard cornering support for peak enjoyment during everyday use. However, comfort doesn’t mean the 996 is track shy thanks to a 50 kg weight loss. On top of that, the 996 had a 45% stiffer high-strength steel chassis and a lower drag coefficient than its predecessor thanks to hours spent in the wind tunnel. Planted up front with a traction optimised rear, the 996 shone when thrown into corners. The balance between comfort and drivability meant Porsche had succeeded in designing a 911 fit for a new era.

Porsche used the 996 platform as a base for two lightweight GTs, the GT2 and the GT3. The GT3 saw a standard Carrera 4 shed equipment in the name of weight loss along with stiffened, adjustable suspension and better brakes. The lighter, stiffer, all wheel drive GT3 was the ultimate track-focused 996.

The Carrera 3.2 revived “Carrera” as a denomination and got the rest of the name from its new 3.2L horizontally opposed flat 6 engine. This 80% new, higher displacement engine was achieved by combining the cylinders from the SC model and the Turbo 3.3’s crankshaft stroke. The inlet manifold and exhaust systems were also new but the 915 transmission was carried over from the SC series.These technical advancements meant the power output was 207hp, which made for a top speed of 150mph and a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds. The list of improvements was endless; bigger brake discs for better heat dissipation, an improved finned cooler, upgraded fuel and ignition control components improved reliability, and a Bosch Motronics DME improved fuel efficienty. The Carrera may have looked nearly the same as the SC, but all the improvements underneath the hood signalled a prolific future for the 911 line.

The 993 model year is famously the last of the air-cooled 911s and was redesigned from the ground up, only borrowing 20% of its parts from the previous generation. Significant technical advances, including a new light-alloy subframe with a coil and wishbone suspension, an all new engine and newly standard 6 speed transmission, made significant progress in creating a more civilized car and a greatly improved driving experience. Designed by Tony Hatter, the 993 retained the classic 911 shape but featured updated exterior panels, significantly flared wheel arches, and a smoother front and rear bumper design. The aggressive stance of the wide-style body accommodated the new multi-link rear suspension which gave the car better stability. Newly improved handling made the car more planted and helped to reduce oversteer in cornering as well as improving ride quality and reducing interior noise. The acclaimed rear design sacrificed top speeds for better handling making it the perfect weekend partner to tackle the narrow, winding English country roads. Simply put, the new design and technical improvements meant the 993 generation Porsche hit the sweet spot between usability and fun.

This generation Carrera is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.6 litre M64 engine developed from the 964 and a dual flow exhaust system which incorporated two catalytic converters. The Porsche 997 (2004-2013) succeeded the 996, which had famously revolutionized the flat-six, air-cooled 911 series with the development of a new chassis to accommodate a water-cooled engine. This radical change in powertrain was a response to environmental concerns, emissions, and noise regulations. The 997 departed from its predecessor’s exterior and interior styling; despite being slightly wider, the car was more visually akin to its classic predecessors with a return to pre-996 Carrera oval headlights and classic looking interior. Larger wheels helped with increased power and performance, although the technical difference was only slight. The car remained low, helping with a drag coefficient.

The 997 was launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year and was succeeded by the 991 in 2013. A new platform meant the car had a sleeker body, with raked windshield, available in coupe, cabriolet, speedster and targa bodystyles. The turbo was introduced in 2006 and featured a revised front bumper, with its fog lamps moved to the corners. The extensive use of aluminium resulted in a turbo that was 90lb lighter than its predecessors.

The Porsche 911 Turbo is considered by many enthusiasts to be the ultimate 911 incarnation, having been launched in 1974 with an impressively powerful 3L flat-six engine with single turbocharger developed from the RSR racer. The Turbo had originally been designed as a homologation special to qualify Porsche for the Group 4 ‘silhouette racing’ formula. With a formidable reputation for excellent performance and exhilarating acceleration both on the racetrack and road, demand for the turbo was high in the 1970s and, due to engineering advancements through the years, has only increased in value and popularity. The engine’s design was derived from the 911 GT1, rated at 437hp and 457 lb/ft torque; the 5-speed Tiptronic variant can reportedly accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds. The engine was the first Porsche production car to use two BorgWarner VTG turbochargers, which were fitted with a two-stage resonance intake system.

The 997 generation’s biggest updates were the interior and exterior styling, most notably the return to the “bug eye” round highlights of the 911 and 993 generations. The slightly widened body and larger 18” wheels gave the 997s a more aggressive stance, and they all benefited from slightly increased power. Inside, the design was similarly reminiscent of the pre-996 generation design. The return to traditional styling makes the 997 generation feel like an homage to the iconic and prolific original 911s, yet the futuristic and modern technology and engineering make it a car firmly rooted in the present. In what was quite possibly an automotive design first, the development of the 997 generation was actually led by the cabriolet rather than the coupe. Cabriolets present a unique set of problems so working on these first would mean the benefits would trickle down to the coupe. For example, because cabriolets don’t have a fixed roof, they struggle with chassis stiffness. Fixing this issue made the coupes more rigid as well, which in turn improved performance.
